That Board Game Guy, known to friends and fans as Chris Pizula, has been a lifelong lover of board games, nerd culture, comic books, sci-fi, and fantasy. Born in 1969 on a starry night under a full moon in Los Angeles, Chris discovered his passion for games at a young age, by purchasing at 6 years old the classic boardgame Clue at a garage sale, which was a big step up from his favorite at the time, Candy Land. It was his first foray into classic boardgames, with Monopoly, Life, Stay Alive, however a copy of Dungeons & Dragons given to him on his tenth birthday that truly ignited his lifelong love affair with gaming and the possibilities therein.
Growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, Chris was surrounded by the burgeoning worlds of comic books and sci-fi. He spent countless hours reading comics, from the superhero epics of Marvel and DC to the darker, more complex narratives of independent publishers. His love for sci-fi and fantasy was further fueled by the works of authors like Ray Bradbury, J.R.R. Tolkien, Phillip K Dick, and directors such as George Lucas, Stephen Spielberg, and Stanley Kubrick.
In junior high and high school, Chris found his tribe in the local comic book store and gaming shop, The Cosmic Castle in his hometown of Fullerton, where he joined weekly game nights and became a fixture in the local nerd community. He quickly became known for his encyclopedic knowledge of games and his infectious enthusiasm.
In his later years, Chris turned his passion into a career, launching a YouTube channel and blog under the moniker “That Board Game Guy.” His content, ranging from detailed game reviews to playthroughs and strategy guides, quickly gained a following, and his approachable style and deep knowledge of games earned him a loyal audience. He became a respected voice in the board game community, frequently invited to speak at conventions and participate in game development projects.
Chris has always believed in the power of board games to bring people together and foster critical thinking and creativity.
When he’s not playing or talking about games, Chris enjoys spending time with his family and exploring other facets of nerd culture. He’s an avid collector of vintage comics, a regular attendee of board game conventions, and a passionate supporter of indie game developers and artists.
